WHO ARE THE
MAASAI PEOPLE?
The Maasai people are a well-known tribe in East Africa. They are a nomadic and pastoralist group belonging to the Nilotic (along the Nile Valley) ethnic group. They inhabit various regions in northern Tanzania and Kenya. The Maasai are particularly recognized in East Africa due to their ancestral ties to the areas surrounding the Serengeti. They speak Maa, a distinct language, and their shared Nilotic roots connect them to the Kalenjin tribe of Kenya, renowned for producing exceptional long-distance runners. The Maasai possess distinct cultural traits, such as their clothing, diet, and way of life.
