TANZANIA’S CURRENCY
Tanzania's official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling. The Shilling is commonly used for smaller expenses such as shopping at local markets, restaurants, and supermarkets. However, the US dollar is also widely accepted, especially in tourist areas where they prefer dollars over the local currency. It's recommended to have both Shillings and dollars in your possession. If you plan to bring US dollars, ensure that the banknotes are in good condition and not older than 2006. Money can only be exchanged at banks, so remember to bring your passport and avoid street exchanges.
Tanzanian banknotes come in denominations of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10000 Shillings, while coins are available in 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 Shillings.
The exchange rate is approximately 2250 Tanzanian Shillings to 1 US Dollar. For the latest exchange rate, refer to a currency calculator.
Regarding ATMs and credit cards in Tanzania, it is advisable to carry enough cash for your safari. While there are ATMs at airports and major cities like Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Moshi, they are scarce in smaller villages. If you're visiting the northern part of Tanzania, you can find ATMs in Karatu and Mto wa Mbu, on the way to the national parks. The withdrawal limit is typically 400,000 Tsh, but it may be lower in rural areas. Bringing a credit card is also recommended to avoid carrying excessive cash.
The amount of money to bring on safari varies depending on individual preferences. Consider factors like engaging in additional activities and purchasing souvenirs. It's customary to tip your guide $8-10 per day. Although the safari is typically prepaid (covering accommodation and meals), it's common for people to spend more than they anticipate. Prices in tourist areas are generally similar to those in Western countries, so it's wise to bring enough money for several days.
When visiting Zanzibar, ensure you have sufficient cash as ATMs are only available at the airport and in Stone Town (Barclay's being the most reliable option) or Paje. Travelers tend to spend more money in Zanzibar compared to the mainland due to leisure activities, drinks, and dining at restaurants. However, if you choose to relax on the beach and spend less, that's also an option. It's best to bring enough cash to avoid running out while in Zanzibar.
